The beliefs of Plato and Aristotle can be both val Essay Example For Students

The beliefs of Plato and Aristotle can be both val Essay id and invalid in many differentways. This is true for many ancient philosophers. Their ideas can often be hard totouch upon due to changes in things such as time, society, technology and evenknowledge. I believe that neither Plato nor Aristotle has complete grasp on theirphilosophy of life, for as much as the two contradict one another, they also tie in witheach other and logically, I believe, one can almost not make sense without the other. Iwas assigned to choose one of the two whos beliefs I agree with more for this essay. Personally, as I mentioned already, I think neither is completely valid and I also believethat without Platos views coming into play, Aristotles views are quite pass. I was alsoassigned to write this essay using examples of personal experience. Althoughregardless I do ultimately agree with the ideas of Aristotle over those of Plato, I alsofeel that ultimate agreement with Plato in this essay would be somewhat illogical andcontradicting of the itinerary expected. For Aristotle believes in experience as reasonand Plato does not. We will write a custom essay on The beliefs of Plato and Aristotle can be both val specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Platos philosophy I believe contradicts its self in more then the way Aristotlebrings to our attention about the senses being separate from the mystical world of theminds. I also somewhat disagree with this Aristotle on this as is evident later on in thisessay. I think it is also a contradiction on Platos behalf to say that experience fools us,but to also believe that people with expertise should have power over those without. Idont understand how one can have expertise on anything without experience. Withoutthe word experience the word expertise would not even exist. I do however, agree withPlato on the fact that life experiences can indeed fool or deceive, but without beingfooled or deceived by experience, we would have nothing to learn from. This is where Ibelieve the two views of these philosophers tie in together. Aristotle believes we live life through personal experience. Without the mistakesand deceptions given to us through experience, as spoken about in Platos philosophy,we wouldnt have as much concrete experience to live our lives through. I believeexperience comes with mistakes and learning through them , and although Platoidentifies that experience causes mistakes through his philosophy, he gives us nochance in that same philosophy to use those mistakes and what we often learn throughthem. Aristotles theory gives us a chance to live and learn which in reality is the waylife works. An experience is not done with once a mistake or deception has beenincorporated into it. The mistake or deception is often more valued and kept close athand to be improved on a future situation of that sort or to avoid a reoccurrence. Thesepoints are more valid though the ideas of Aristotle. Such instances in our lives where the tie in between the two philosophers isevident includes such emotions as love, greed, fear, and guilt and our actions we takeupon these emotions as well as all emotions in general. Plato claims that thephysical senses of touch, taste, smell, hearing and seeing are the basis to all things inlife over experience. Imagine ones life however, although emotions cannot always beidentified as accurately as the direct physical senses, without feelings such as love orfear. If a human falsely identifies love, or hate for that matter, which are commonmistakes people make throughout life, there is no deeper way to look into and identifysuch things as true for the future. If one did not have fears to overcome, life wouldstand without challenge. Although today many of these things are often taken forgranted, they all offer learning experiences, as Aristotle would agree, and can oftenimpact our lives in a much more radical way then anything related to the physica lsenses. .uaae0238ce2be9f14e5fd0614a7f410aa , .uaae0238ce2be9f14e5fd0614a7f410aa .postImageUrl , .uaae0238ce2be9f14e5fd0614a7f410aa .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uaae0238ce2be9f14e5fd0614a7f410aa , .uaae0238ce2be9f14e5fd0614a7f410aa:hover , .uaae0238ce2be9f14e5fd0614a7f410aa:visited , .uaae0238ce2be9f14e5fd0614a7f410aa:active { border:0!important; } .uaae0238ce2be9f14e5fd0614a7f410aa .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uaae0238ce2be9f14e5fd0614a7f410aa { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uaae0238ce2be9f14e5fd0614a7f410aa:active , .uaae0238ce2be9f14e5fd0614a7f410aa:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uaae0238ce2be9f14e5fd0614a7f410aa .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uaae0238ce2be9f14e5fd0614a7f410aa .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uaae0238ce2be9f14e5fd0614a7f410aa .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uaae0238ce2be9f14e5fd0614a7f410aa .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uaae0238ce2be9f14e5fd0614a7f410aa:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uaae0238ce2be9f14e5fd0614a7f410aa .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uaae0238ce2be9f14e5fd0614a7f410aa .uaae0238ce2be9f14e5fd0614a7f410aa-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uaae0238ce2be9f14e5fd0614a7f410aa:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Artificial Contraception EssayIn relation to this issue of physical senses vs. emotional senses, such anexample to compare and contrast the two is sex. Sex is a physical act, as the fivesenses are physical and is supposed to come into play after the emotion love is foundbetween two people. In contrary, humans are often fooled by the physical world of sex, believing good, passionate, addictive sex is equal to love. This is in too many casesfalse and an instance that sides me a bit with Plato. Perhaps this is evidence

What Are The Pros and Cons of Job Hopping

What Are The Pros and Cons of Job Hopping The jury remains out on job hopping. Most people agree that the stigma is mostly gone, particularly if you’re in the unique brand of circumstances that makes it the wisest move for your career. But there are still pros and cons- even if you think it’s all good or all bad. Job Hopping ConsEmployers might hesitate. If you have a track record of loving and leaving, so to speak, employers might be hesitant to hire you. Or worse, they might put you on the chopping block first if or when lay-offs are in order. At least before you’ve had a chance to prove your loyalty in this Basically, they fear you’ll jump ship at the first sign of trouble. And, to be fair, they have no counter evidence!Lack of satisfaction. If you don’t stick around long enough to really get stuck into a company and reap some of the slow-release long term benefits of loyalty, you’ll miss a potentially truly enjoyable part of your career.Relationships are in danger. Gaining exper ience by job hopping might get you a bunch of bullets on your resume, but it won’t necessarily get you a good recommendation and it won’t help you build the kind of relationships that make for a long and successful career. The last thing you want to do is give the impression that you’re unreliable.Greener grass syndrome. If you get into a pattern of job hopping, you might start to fall victim to the trap of always thinking that the grass is greener in some other job or other career. Try to find a place to settle down when you can and when that would be appropriate. Otherwise, you’ll develop a long list of shallow experiences and expertise, and never reap the sweet rewards of loyalty.  Job Hopping  ProsFinding yourself. If you’re not entirely sure what you want to do with your life, a few job hops early on can actually be very useful in saving you valuable time. Just be mindful to figure out what you like and start pointing yourself in that dire ction with some force and purpose.Variety is fun! They don’t call it the spice of life for nothing. You get that many more opportunities to make sure you find the right fit- as well as a fresh take on things with each new company. But remember, the novelty wears off very quickly. Make sure to get accustomed also to the routine of working a job for more than a few months.Networking, networking, networking. You can amass a truly powerful network by job hopping. Just make sure you’re actually making lasting connections and not just blowing through people for the sake of it.A cash increase. Jumping to a new position, when done right, almost always ends up with you making a bit more money- often more than a routine raise. You’ll grow as a person. You’ll meet more people, you’ll work in a broader range of diverse fields and institutions, and you’ll be exposed to a much wider variety of information and resources. This can really build your versatili ty, and indeed, your attractiveness as a long-term hire in the end, provided you shape your experience mindfully.

CASE STUDY; CAR COSTS ARE CUT THROUGH NEW TECHNOLOGY Essay

CASE STUDY; CAR COSTS ARE CUT THROUGH NEW TECHNOLOGY - Essay Example This is the reason for fall in the price of palladium in the following months. As per the theory of economics, the price of a commodity increases when its demand increases in the market. Similarly, the price falls in the event of fall in the demand for the same. The same has happened in the case of Palladium. Though Mazda has not announced by when the new technology would be used, the market expected a downfall in the demand for the commodity if automobile industry adopts the new catalyst. Thus, the demand of palladium is changed due to change in non price factor, that is, technology. Therefore the demand curve shifts downwards with no change in supply. Subsequently the price will reduce to reach at a new equilibrium. This phenomenon can be explained using figure 1 below. Let D1 be the existing demand curve of palladium. When the news of new technology came up, the demand curve shifted to D3. This means that the quantity of Palladium that is demanded by the industry is reduced and so the price also gets reduced to adjust to the change in quantity demanded. Same can also be seen in the case of supply curve figure 2. (Webshells, 2010) When demand for palladium is reduced, there is an oversupply created in the market. Due to the oversupply the supply curve s0 is shifted to s2. Therefore the price comes down to adjust to the market. Technological breakthroughs are very much important in automobile industry. Only technology adoption can help automobile companies to reduce the cost of production. Take the case of new innovation by Mazda. As per the technology, palladium usage can be reduced by 90%. Palladium being one of the most expensive metals in the world, the cost saved by the company by adopting this technology is huge. The savings in cost will help the companies to charge less for the cars and thus companies can introduce low cost cars in the market. Tata has done a

The harmful value of value meals Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

The harmful value of value meals - Essay Example For instance, Yum! Brands Inc., has established 38,000 restaurants globally; and McDonalds has set-up a total of 33,000 chains from all over the continent. Hence, it is no surprise why fast food is already served at restaurants, drive-through, schools and universities, bus stations, airports, and even at hospitals. People’s fast food preference may be due to the fact that it is served quicker; thus, allowing them to maximize their time and become more efficient in their daily tasks. Likewise, others opt to buy fast food for their meal because it is delicious and very affordable. However, little did they know that as they consume more and more fast food each day, they are putting themselves in high danger of acquiring various fatal diseases. Obesity Obesity (i.e. a body mass index of greater than or equal to 30) is one of the detrimental effects of too much fast food consumption. According to Brindal et al., fast food contains highly dense and high level of fats and calories pe r serving high (113). Thus, over-consumption of fast food makes people more susceptible to gaining weight, which usually exceeds the normal status. According to the World Health Organization (â€Å"Obesity and Overweight†), since the year 1980, the total number of global-wide obesity has doubled; and just recently, the total number of people who are obese has reached more than 500 million. Obesity makes people’s life more difficult and hassle because people with a very heavy weight cannot move freely, which makes less mobile. As an effect, they may develop other complications like being bow-legged (especially for obese children), sleep disturbances like sleep apnea, asthma, arthritis, and poor surgical and childbirth outcomes (for mothers) Clarke (â€Å"Health Risks†). The worst is, WHO (â€Å"Obesity and Overweight†) made it clear that obesity is more deadly than being underweight. Aside from the physical danger brought by obesity to people, it may also put them in a state of emotional crisis. Obesity may lead to depression because of the hormonal imbalance that happens inside the body as more fats are consumed (Bessesen, Hill and Wyatt). Aside from that, being obese, unfortunately, increases their chances of being the subject of negative judgment, severe bullying, and social discrimination. Considering the societal norm of beauty and ideal body structure, being obese does not qualify to the established standards. Thus, obese individuals need to handle those emotional and social challenges in which only few may endure. Some may resort to suicide because for them, it is better to end their lives than to continuously experience the trauma of being rejected. Apparently, this is how far fast food eating can throw people. By merely wanting to experience the comfort fast food offers, they need to carry the physical and emotional burden it brings. However, this is just one of the reasons why it is practical to abolish the practice of eati ng fast food. Type 2 Diabetes Type 2 diabetes is another health problem that may arise as a result of fast food eating. Fast foods such as soft drinks or soda, French fries, shakes, sandwiches, burger, pizza pies, etc. are rich in carbohydrates (Clarke â€Å"Why is Fast Food†). Too much carbohydrate intake increases the level of the blood component triglyceride, which results to either, failure of the pancreas to produce enough amount of insulin or body system’s improper insulin use (Clarke â€Å"Why is Fast Food†). This scenario exposes individuals to the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, for sugar in their body will build up in the bloodstream instead of being utilized for energy. For instance, in the

Essay --

â€Å"There is a way to be good again† (2). This thought repeats through Amir's mind over and over throughout Khaled Hosseini's novel, The Kite Runner. This is the story of a boy who struggles to find redemption. The author illustrates the story of Amir and how it is not possible to make wrongs completely right again because it is too late to change the past. In this novel, Hosseini shows that redemption is obtainable. Hosseini shows that guilt is the primary motivation for someone who seeks redemption. In this novel, redemption is not when things are justified, but when the wrong has been done and cannot change to be right. As defined in a letter to Amir by an old family friend, Rahim Khan, redemption is when the guilt from something wrong leads to something good (302). Because of events that Amir is faced with, Hosseini illustrates a story where a big part of guilt plays in the desire for redemption. Guilt is a strong incentive in a quest for redemption. Rahim Khan says to Amir â€Å"there is a way to be good again† in the beginning of the novel, insinuating that there was hope and that there was a way for Amir to have peace with himself. This phrase was something that continuously repeated in Amir’s mind throughout the novel which was a reminder that there was a way to be rid of the guilt; a way to be good again. Amir begins his story by saying â€Å"I became what I am today at the age of 12† (1). It is noticed that he says â€Å"what I am today† rather than â€Å"who† and finishes the chapter leaving the reader with a slightly bitter feeling that the narrator has a dark past that he can not forget. He gives the idea that he is not happy with who he has become, and it was his wrongdoing that made it that way it was. Amir basis his guilt through his mem... ...his needs and his lack of standing up for himself. Another character who was searching for redemption in this novel was Amir's wife Soraya. Before they got married, she confesses to him about the time she ran away with someone as a teenager and clears up her past which had also haunted her (164). Even after she confessed to Amir, people still talked down about her because of her past (178). Amir, like Baba, Rahim Khan and Soraya, sinned by what he had done wrong, or rather what he didn’t do right. This caused guilt that he attempted to hide, but the memories and the past continued to haunt him, nag at him, and remind him of the person who had loved him so much. This guilt of betrayal weighs on Amir throughout the story, and pushes him to seek out redemption. He longs to â€Å"be good again† and get rid of the guilt that he has carried since he was just twelve years old.

Demonstrating communication skills Essay

Communication with employees will guarantee alignment with the organization’s overall strategy (mission- vision- goals). Supervisors could use internal communication to provide a supportive working environment with a clear set of expectations for all staff. As a result employees will have a better understanding of the decisions made by the organizations, so supervisors could avoid miss expectations by developing and maintaining communication channels with employees. Figure (1) shows some channels to communicate strategic information 1. 1 Efficient Intranet â€Å"The intranet is one of the best and most valuable tools available for employee communication. A company intranet can help employees and HR save time by giving employees instant access to contact lists, company policies, announcements, training opportunities, and benefits information. † (Business & Legal Reports, 2007a1, p. 1). However, â€Å"the company should take some steps to achieve this communication channel such as: update frequently, make it simple and easy, provide a search feature, track the usage, organize locally according to departments ad teams, provide a starting page for each department, include files, documents, policies, and procedures, list phone extensions and contact lists, allow for feedback forms, use a content management. † (Business & Legal Reports, 2007a1, p. 1-2). 1. 2 Open Book Management Style or Dissemination of strategic information Rubin, L. and Merripen, C.(2003) presented this practice which includes sharing information with employees for better understanding of management decisions. Employees became better informed about the business and feel more inclusive and entrepreneurial about their contribution and impact. Then employees moved their focus from just their job to looking at the company as a whole. † (p. 4) Collins, R. and Druten, K. V. (2003) â€Å"found a strong link between organizational performance over the past three years and the emphasis placed on communicating information to all members about the organization’s purpose, aspirations, strategy and performance. † Figure (1) shows some communication channels that managers and supervisors could use to communicate strategic information with employees. Figure (1): Channels to communicate strategic information Source: Collins, R. and Druten, K. V. (2003). Human Resources Management Practices 1. Determining Effective Orientation and Training Methods 2. 1 Best practices for effective orientation New employees orientation is important to facilitate the integration of new employees in the organization with understanding the organization’s culture, mission, vision and values. Orsini, B. (2000) presented some best practices for new employees orientation such as: â€Å"sessions for new employees to introduce them to the organization and provide them with an overview of the organizational mandate and structure, mentoring new employees by a staff member, profile of employee new to group by within a local newsletter or e-mail, and office tours as an opportunity to meet staff face-to-face and get a sense of what they do†. 2. 2 Best practices for effective training methods. Training nowadays is not a luxury anymore. Due to the competitive marketplace and the complexity of jobs, training became a necessity for surviving and competing for both organizations and employees. Recently. There is â€Å"much greater emphasis on training as a means to cultivate, motivate, and retain quality workers†. (Hays, S. W. , 2004, p. 261) â€Å"Operationally, supervisors and managers are responsible for ensuring their employees get the training they need and/or the opportunity to attend the training classes. † (Bjomberg, L. , 2002) 2. 2. 1 Learning for life Program To show how could such practice help the organization, it’s useful to mention a real case study. For example, â€Å"Honeywell Limited’s Scarborough factory developed a learning for life program to improve productivity and quality and reduce costs in an effort to remain competitive in the global economy. Eighty percent of the factory participated in this program and Honeywell has increased its factory throughput by 180% and improved the quality of its products by 92%†. (The Conference Board of Canada, 1998, p. 5) This innovative program â€Å"developed more productive employees, increased productivity, improved quality, effective collaborative decision-making, improved communication skills. † (The Conference Board of Canada, 1998, p. 5) 2. 2. 2 Other best practices The Conference Board of Canada (1998) presented many other best practices in training or workplace literacy such as: ? Empowering adult learners ? Excellence in workplace literacy? Skills for a stable workplace ? Literacy through e-learning ? Establishing a baseline for training ? Peer tutoring: employee helping employees Such practices has resulted in increased productivity, reduced staff turnover, enhanced performance, improved quality, effective collaborative decision-making, improved communication skills, in another word, it helped in creating a positive environment for both the employer and employees because benefits was achieved for both of them. 2. Improving Productivity for Teams Improving productivity for teams and for employees in general is the ultimate goal for all organizations to maximize the overall performance. And because we are talking about humans or employees, improving productivity should include creating a convenient environment that could help them to work productively.
